Anyone can suffer from sleep apnea, but certain factors increase the risk:

  • Age: Although sleep apnea can develop at any age and in both sexes, it is more common in men between the ages of 40 and 60. The risk of sleep apnea is also significant in women, but symptoms may be different.   • Alcohol and certain medications: Drinking alcohol or taking certain medications can relax the throat muscles, obstructing airflow and increasing the risk of sleep apnea.
  • Family history: Sleep apnea can be hereditary. People with family members who suffer from this disorder are at greater risk of developing it.
