Use at your destination
Enjoy your stay
What do I need to consider when I arrive?
When you arrive at your destination, make sure you have everything you need and your device is working properly so that you can fix any problems before going to sleep. With your CPAP device, you’ll sleep better and experience less fatigue, allowing you to get the most out of your trip.
The power
- Your device is equipped with a power converter, which allows it to work with the power supply in most parts of the world.
- However, you’ll need to use the appropriate plug adapter for the country you’re visiting or a universal adapter. To find out what types of plugs are used in each country, visit this site.
Water
- It’s recommended to use distilled or demineralized water in your device’s humidifier. Find out before you leave whether you can purchase some near your accommodations.
- If distilled water is difficult to find, you can use bottled spring water. However, because of the minerals it contains, which can form deposits, limit yourself to a two-week period to avoid damaging your device. When you return, you can remove any deposits with a mixture of water and vinegar.
Altitude
- Are you travelling in the mountains? All devices automatically adjust to changes in altitude (up to about 2,500 metres), except for the following models:
- Fisher & Paykel, 200 and 600 series
- REMstar Plus
- Respironics, M series
- On previous models, altitude pressure compensation can be adjusted manually to provide the most effective treatment. Contact your supplier about this before you leave.
Weather
Extreme weather can affect your comfort. For example, too much humidity can cause condensation in the tubing and mask, which can lead to face splashes. To address this problem, you have these options:
- Reduce the humidity level of the device.
- Use a heated tube to ensure constant temperature and humidity control while increasing the heat as needed to limit condensation.
- Use a hose cover.
Conversely, when the weather is very cold and/or the air is drier, it can dry out your mouth and nose, leading to nasal congestion or mouth openings.
If you have a ResMed device, the solution is to increase the humidity level of the device or increase the air temperature in the tubing, which you can do with a heated tube, a hose cover, or by placing the tubing under the bedcover, close to your body. For Fisher & Paykel devices, the heat in the tubing automatically adjusts when the humidity level increases. Respironics devices can increase the humidity level without affecting the heat in the tubing. These are adjusted independently.
Maintenance
- Remember to regularly maintain your device, especially in warm countries where bacteria and fungi grow quickly.
- Follow the cleaning recommendations and make sure you have enough mild soap and cleaning wipes for your trip.
- Clean your accessories with high-quality, clean water to prevent the growth of bacteria.
- If your device breaks or stops working, contact your supplier. A representative can help you fix the problem, recommend a place to have your device repaired, or suggest where to replace your machine or accessories.
- Some places may require you to replace your filter more frequently due to the air quality or cleanliness of the site. For example, in a very dusty area, the filter will get dirty faster!
