Radiology panoramic view of the maxilla

X-rays of panoramic views of the maxilla are taken from outside your mouth to get a full view of all your teeth, your jaws and joints.

Your dentist uses these techniques (panoramic view of the maxilla) to detect:

  • Periodontal disease (gums, ligaments)
  • Impacted teeth
  • Infections
  • A fractured jaw
  • Cysts and tumours

Examination procedure

For the examination procedure:

  • You will be asked to rest your chin on a small tray and your hands will be placed on handles
  • Small rods will be used to keep your head in position
  • The technologist will place a tab between your teeth to separate your jaws

Please note that the total duration of your visit for this examination can be between 15 and 30 minutes, even though the examination procedure itself will only last around 20 seconds. The procedure is painless.

Preparing for the Examination (for adults)

To properly prepare yourself for the exam, we will ask you:

  • To remove all metal objects on and near your head (jewellery, piercings, hair clips)
  • To Remove your dentures
  • Not to chew gum or eat candy

A medical prescription is required to perform this examination.

The costs of this examination are covered by the Régie de l'Assurance Maladie du Québec (RAMQ) for children under 10 years old.
