Temporomandibular joint MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the examination of choice for studying the structures that make up the temporomandibular joint, which is the junction between the jaw and the skull. It captures clear and precise images that allow the radiologist to detect conditions such as meniscal lesions.

Examination procedure

For this scan, we will ask you to do the following:

  • Lie comfortably on a mobile examination table in a bright, airy room.
  • Wear, if you wish, headphones with music or ear plugs. The MRI machine produces percussive noises that some people may find a nuisance.
  • Remain still for 20 to 30 minutes until the exam is completed. We will take pictures of you with your mouth closed and open. The technologist will give you a device that will help you keep your mouth open for 3 minutes or less.

The duration of the procedure and noise generated by the machine may make some people uncomfortable. At ImagixTM, our technologist can see and hear you at all times and will ensure your comfort and well-being throughout the examination.

To allow you to plan your visit, please keep in mind that the total duration of your visit can vary between 30 and 60 minutes, even if the test itself only lasts between 20 and 60 minutes.

Preparing for the Examination

To ensure that your temporomandibular joint MRI scan is a success, please do not apply cream, makeup or aftershave to the neck or face.

A medical prescription is required to perform this examination.
Please note that MRI examinations are not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). However, most group insurance plans cover the costs.
