Ultrasound-guided Infiltration

What is ultrasound-guided infiltration?

Ultrasound, also called “ultrasonography,” is an examination conducted using a device that transforms ultrasound waves into an image. Ultrasound-guided infiltration consists of injecting an anti-inflammatory agent or a viscosupplement into a joint. The radiologist uses an ultrasound machine as a guide and to see the infiltration site clearly.

How the procedure works

  • The health care professional asks you to lie on the examination table. They will help you position yourself in the best possible way, depending on the type of procedure, and then ask you to remain still.
  • In a fully aseptic environment, the radiologist carefully proceeds with the infiltration. This procedure does not take long.
  • During the examination, the radiologist or technologist may capture a few images, if necessary.

To help you plan, keep in mind that the appointment can last from 20 to 30 minutes, even if the procedure itself takes only 10 to 15 minutes.

A medical prescription is required to perform this infiltrations.

The costs of this examination are covered by the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).

In the Medvue network of private clinics, the examination is at the patient’s expense and can be reimbursed by private insurance companies.
