Computed tomography

Computed tomography

A computed tomography (CT scan) is an X-ray exam that captures detailed images in 3D. Imagix uses a state-of-the-art CT scanner equipped with “multislices” or “multidetectors.” This device provides the highest possible diagnostic accuracy with less risk and discomfort than some more invasive procedures.

Among others, Imagix™ medical imaging clinics offer the following types of CT-Scan:

Some CT scans require the injection of a contrast agent, which makes it possible to see your organs and any abnormalities more clearly.

Almost any part of your body can be observed using CT:

  • Brain
  • Respiratory tract
  • Lungs
  • Bones
  • Abdomen
  • Pelvic region
  • Small intestine
  • Colon
  • Soft tissue
  • Blood vessels

CT scan examination procedure

For the examination procedure, you will be asked:

  • to change into a hospital gown and remove your jewellery and other metal objects, which can interfere with image quality
  • to lay comfortably on an exam table and stay still
  • to hold your breath for a few seconds, as the table will slide into the CT machine. We will capture the images very quickly to minimize the dose of radiation you absorb

Depending on the test prescribed by your health professional, it may be required to inject a contrast agent. We will go through a list of contrast agents with you when you book your appointment. If you think you may be allergic, please let us know.

Please note that the total duration of your visit for this examination can be between 30 and 60 minutes, even though the examination procedure itself will only last between 5 and 25 minutes.

Specificities and Contraindications of CT scan

  • If you are pregnant or think you might be, you must notify the technician prior to the examination
  • If you have diabetes, kidney failure, an iodine allergy or a rare kidney disease, it is important to notify us prior to the examination. Also, we may ask you to send us a blood analysis of your creatinine (kidney function rate)

A medical prescription is required to perform this examination.
Please note that CT-Scan examinations are not covered by the Régie de l’Assurance Maladie du Québec (RAMQ). However, most group insurance plans cover the costs.
