RESTING ECG ABPM HOLTER MONITOR
A resting electrocardiogram is a simple test that measures the bioelectric activity of the heart. Electrodes are placed on the chest, arms and legs to take readings for about 10 minutes. It can be performed following other sampling at the service centre, if indicated on your prescription. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is performed with a device that the patient wears for 24 hours. The test records blood pressure and determines if treatment is necessary. It takes 5 to 10 minutes to set up the device. This is a small, portable device that continuously records the heart rate for 24 or 48 hours during daily activities. The device takes 5 to 10 minutes to install.

A medical prescription is required for these tests. Electrocardiograms are interpreted by a non-affiliated cardiologist. Tests with an interpretation of the results start at $75 and are not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).

Why have a cardiovascular exam?

Some people may have cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, high cholesterol, etc.). Your doctor may prescribe a test (ECG, Holter monitor or ABPM) if a heart problem is suspected. This test serves several purposes:

DETECTION

A test may be prescribed to screen for a heart condition, with or without symptoms

MAKING A DIAGNOSIS

The test enables a diagnosis in a person who manifests symptoms: chest pain, palpitations, fainting, shortness of breath , etc

AFTER A CARDIAC EVENT

Following a cardiac event (e.g., heart attack , arrhythmia), the test can assess the condition of the heart and monitor the effects of the treatment.

DOING A FOLLOW-UP

The test can verify the functioning of a pacemaker after its implantation or evaluate the effectiveness of certain medications.

FAQ

How do I prepare for a resting ECG?

It is not necessary to fast before an ECG, but it is recommended not to smoke just before the test. Please bring an up-to-date list of the medications you are taking.

How does a Holter monitor test work?

A Holter monitor continuously records your heart rate for a minimum of 24 hours. The device and instructions for its use will be given to you at your appointment. Our devices are lightweight and allow you to go about your usual business.

Do I have to sleep with my monitor (Holter or ABPM)?

Yes. It is not recommended to remove the monitor during the recording period. During the night, make sure you are comfortable while keeping the device on.
