Platelet Anisocytosis

Platelet anisocytosis means a large variation in the size of platelets in the blood. This anisocytosis can be found in the presence of an abnormally low number of platelets (thrombocytopenia) or an abnormally high number of platelets (essential thrombocytemia, secondary thrombocytemia).

Anisocytosis is caused by the synthesis of new platelets by the bone marrow because it is stimulated by the destruction of platelets in the blood (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) or a disorder of the bone marrow itself (myeloproliferative syndrome, May-Hegglin anomaly, etc.).
