HPV testing alone

Human papilloma viruses (HPV) are responsible for more than 95% of cases of cervical cancer. There are approximately 100 types of HPV, 14 of which are designated as “high risk,” Of these types, 16 and 18 alone account for more than 70% of cases of cervical cancer. The HPV test allows for the screening of all high-risk types, in particular 16 and 18.

Unlike HPV testing with cytology triage, HPV testing alone can be performed by cervical swabbing or by vaginal swabbing.

In the event of a positive result for high-risk HPV, cytology is recommended in order to confirm the presence of suspicious cells and the need to proceed with a colposcopy. In addition, if the HPV detected is type 16 or 18, a colposcopy is recommended, as these are the types that are most frequently linked to cervical cancer.

If the HPV test was performed using a vaginal swab, a second sample will need to be taken from the cervix to allow for liquid-based cytology.

According to the initial recommendations of the INESS (January 2022), HPV testing to screen for cervical cancer is indicated every five years for women between the ages of 25 and 65. Before the age of 25, the virus is very common and the vast majority of infections heal on their own. It should be noted that only a small percentage of high-risk HPV infections develop into cancer.
