I sleep well, so surely I don’t have sleep apnea
It's a myth!
Even if you sleep all night without waking up, it’s not a sign that you don’t have sleep apnea. In fact, it takes on average more than seven years between the onset of the first symptom of sleep apnea and diagnosis. That is why 90% of sleep apnea cases are not diagnosed, and in Quebec, one in ten people will suffer from sleep apnea in their lifetime!
Since this disease has significant medical and socio-economic consequences (depression, diabetes, loss of libido, impotence, headache, exhaustion), it is important to detect it as soon as possible because the treatments available today can prevent many complications.
There are many misconceptions about sleep apnea and its treatment. Among the most persistent are:
- the belief that sleep apnea is linked to obesity (false! 40% of people who suffer from it are not obese)
- that only men suffer from it (for menopausal women, the prevalence is equal to that of men)
- that it is just a matter of losing weight to get rid of it
- that treatment is expensive (95% of insurance plans cover the purchase of a continuous positive airway pressure ventilation device)
- that you cannot wear the mask at night if you are claustrophobic (false!) or that it is too noisy (a lot less noisy than snoring!)
